The fin whale

E-mail Print PDF

The crossing of fin whales in the Pelagie archipelago is a seasonal event that repeats annually.

The period from late February to April at a short distance from the coast of Lampedusa and Linosa is easy to spot in groups or solitary individuals. This wide range of time shows that the archipelago of Lampedusa, Linosa and Lampione, is an important winter feeding area for this speciesthreatened with extinction. The species whose scientific name is Balaenoptera physalus, is the largest whale in the Mediterranean, a giant of over 20meters and 50 tons in weight. Studies on the distribution and number of the common people of the whale population estimate of about 3000specimens. The monitoring activities of the Marine Protected "Pelagie Islands" sensitive species in this time of year focus on this species consideredendangered and therefore protected by national laws and international conventions. Thanks to the help of local fishermen the amp can oggni years to document the passage.

The Alien Species

E-mail Print PDF
The progressive invasion of alien species are now one of the major environmental emergencies and are considered by the international scientific community, the second leading cause of biodiversity loss at global scale. The flora and fauna of the planet have evolved over billions of years and the oceans, seas, mountain ranges, deserts and even large rivers have created physical barriers to movement of species, contributing significantly to thegreat biodiversity the planet and the development of animal and plant communities considered typical of particular regions or localities. However, through the influence of man drops the natural barriers that had limited the development of flora and fauna within certain regions and species are coming, either accidentally or intentionally, in places thousands of miles from their original natural habitats ...

Islands' Species and Habitats

The Pelagian Islands, for their geographical position in the middle of the Mediterranean, are a point of unity and coexistence of flora and fauna of theeastern basin, warmer, and the West, influenced by Atlantic currents. In the tidal zone can be observed in Trottoir vermeti, the algae Cystoseira belts and scale of the 'calcareous algae Lithophyllum papillosum.Very interesting are the dozens of semi-submerged caves where it is easy to see facies Astroides calycularis a few inches deep. The coastal waters are very clear and the visibility under 'water can reach 30 meters, which is why the Pelagie are highly sought by divers andsnorkelers also. In this area of the Mediterranean Posidonia oceanica forms extensive meadows from 3 / 4 feet deep, in some sandy coves on the southern island of Lampedusa is the upper limit of the prairies to one meter deep. Above the leaves of Posidonia and salps living groups ofdamselfish, near the rock is easy to observe different species of wrasses (maiden, maiden pavonina, speckled thrush, thrush peacock etc..) and Sparidae (bream major, banded seabream, sparaglione, sea bream, look, etc..).
